What Is Water Baptism?

To put it concisely, water baptism is an outward expression of an inward change and is a symbolic act that puts action to your faith.

We believe water baptism is by total immersion in the water. When you enter the water, it's symbolic of dying to yourself and being buried with Christ. Then, you being lifted out of the water is symbolic of being raised to new life with Christ Jesus and becoming a new creation. (Romans 6:1-4)

One being baptized must knowingly have made the decision to follow Christ and desire to express that their old self has passed away and they have new life in Christ. (Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38)

Water baptism is often connected to salvation in scripture. However, these verses must be read with the understanding that scripture also says salvation is a gift from God made available to us by His grace through faith and that it's impossible for anyone to earn salvation through works. Salvation comes by faith in Jesus Christ. Similarly, water baptism without faith is just a quick bath. But connected to our faith, our water baptism becomes a public proclamation of our faith in Jesus where we identify with His death, burial, and resurrection. All that said, water baptism does not save you, but it is a command from Jesus that should be taken seriously and not delayed. (Ephesians 2:4-9, Matthew 28:18-20)
